This week's lesson: one full test, and an honest review

You've worked on every task that matters most for Proficient English. This week you'll take a full mock test under real conditions, review it task by task, and decide what to do in the final days before your test.

Take the mock like the real test

  • One sitting, about 2 hours, in the official order: Speaking & Writing, then Reading, then Listening.
  • Use a headset and speak at a normal volume, as you will in the test centre.
  • No pausing between tasks unless you must. The value of a mock is practising concentration over two hours.

What our mock can and can't tell you

Our mock marks your answers on our questions. It shows which tasks lose you marks, but it is not a PTE score. To see how close you are to Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69 and Speaking 76, use your real result or an official Pearson practice test, and type those scores on your plan home.

Review speaking first

Listen to every speaking answer and check:

  • Fluency: any restarts or long pauses? Did any answer stop early?
  • Pronunciation: are long words stressed clearly? Can you hear the -s and -ed endings?
  • Content: in Describe Image and Retell Lecture, the main point and two details; in Summarize Group Discussion, every speaker and the outcome; in Respond to a Situation, every detail and the right tone.

Mark each speaking task green (no problems), amber (one problem) or red (two or more). Red tasks are your daily practice for the next week.

Then writing

For your essay:

  • Is it 200 to 300 words, with your position in the introduction?
  • Does each body paragraph have a reason and a specific example?
  • How many spelling and grammar errors are there? Compare with your error list from week 4.

For Summarize Written Text, check that it's one sentence with one full stop. For Summarize Spoken Text, check 50 to 70 words.

Then listening and reading

Group your mistakes:

  • Dictation: missing small words, wrong endings or spelling?
  • Wrong clicks or choices in Highlight Incorrect Words and multiple-answer questions?
  • Collocations in the fill-in-the-blanks tasks?

The group with the most mistakes is your focus.

If one skill is still far from its target

Repeat that skill's week, with one change: do every task twice. The second attempt, after you read the model answer, is where most of the learning happens. For speaking, that usually means weeks 1 and 3 again.

The last week before your test

  • Speak every day, even on busy days: five Repeat Sentence and two Describe Image answers take ten minutes.
  • Write one timed essay three or four days before the test, then review your error list instead of writing more.
  • Don't change your technique now. Use the structures you've practised.
  • Prepare the practical details: ID, the test centre address, timing, and sleep.

On the day

Start every speaking answer straight away and keep going through small slips. Plan your essay for 3 minutes. In multiple-answer questions, choose only what you're sure of.

What's next

If your official scores meet every Proficient minimum, well done. If you're aiming higher, the PTE 79 strategy guide explains what Superior English needs.

Weekly check: Full PTE mock test

All 22 task types in one sitting. Our marking shows which tasks to work on; it isn't a PTE score.
