PTE might suit you ifβ¦
- You're comfortable typing and using a computer.
- You'd rather speak to a microphone than to a person.
- You want fast results and flexible test dates.
- You like clear, rule-based marking that you can prepare for strategically.
IELTS might suit you ifβ¦
- You prefer talking to a real person, and conversation feels more natural than speaking to a screen.
- You'd rather handwrite (paper-based option).
- You find PTE's fast pace and integrated tasks stressful.
Is one test easier?
Neither is officially "easier". They test the same skills in different ways. Pearson's 2025 concordance study shows the scores line up differently for each skill. For example, IELTS 7.0 corresponds to a much higher PTE speaking score (76β82) than PTE listening score (58β63). See the full table in our PTE to IELTS converter.
For Australian visas
Both PTE Academic (taken at a test centre) and IELTS Academic or General Training are on the Home Affairs list, each with its own score table. Home Affairs doesn't accept fully online or at-home tests. See score requirements for Australia, and always check the official pages for your visa.
How to decide
Try a sample of each. Do our free PTE practice test, and the free practice materials on the official IELTS website. Whichever one feels more natural is usually the better choice.
