Off by default. When it's on, your browser's built-in speech recognition turns your voice into text. In some browsers (for example Chrome), the browser maker processes that audio on its servers. We never receive it. Pause and timing feedback always works on your device, with nothing sent anywhere.

What the feedback tells you
- Started speaking after: PTE closes the microphone if you're silent for about 3 seconds, so aim to start within 1β2 seconds.
- Speaking time: keep talking for most of the available time in open tasks.
- Longest pause and pauses over 1 second: fewer, shorter pauses mean better oral fluency, one of the three things PTE scores.
- With "Check my words": what your browser heard, a content score for Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence, key points for other tasks, speaking speed and filler words.
Your privacy
Your browser asks permission to use the microphone. The recording and the pause analysis stay in your browser's memory, and they disappear when you leave or reload the page. Nothing is uploaded. "Check my words" is optional; see the note above it.
What to listen for
- Silence: any pause longer than a second or two?
- Restarts: did you go back to fix a word? Practise carrying on instead.
- Pace: steady and natural, neither rushed nor slow.
- Content: did you cover the main points in your own words?
