TOEFL iBT in 2026: what's new

The TOEFL iBT was updated in January 2026. Here's what changed and what matters if you're using it for Australia.

Updated 2026-10-13

What changed in January 2026

According to ETS, the organisation behind TOEFL:

  • A new 1–6 score scale, aligned with the CEFR (see our CEFR levels guide). During a two-year transition, ETS also reports comparable scores on the familiar 0–120 scale.
  • Adaptive Reading and Listening: these sections adjust midway through, based on how you're doing.
  • New question types reflecting group discussions and project work.
  • Faster results: scores within 72 hours or less.

Check ETS's TOEFL website for the current format and sample questions.

Using TOEFL for Australia

Important: Home Affairs says you must select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" when you register. Results not registered this way aren't accepted for Australian visas. The TOEFL iBT Home Edition isn't accepted.

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs requires (Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking):

Level Scores
Competent 16 / 16 / 19 / 19
Proficient 22 / 22 / 26 / 24
Superior 26 / 27 / 30 / 28

These are section scores on the 0–30 scale. Check the official Home Affairs pages for how they apply to the new format, and compare with other tests in our English tests table.

Should you choose TOEFL?

TOEFL is popular for study in North America. In Australia, PTE and IELTS are more common, and test centres for them are easier to find. If you've already taken TOEFL (registered for Australia), it can still be a good option. Otherwise, compare PTE vs IELTS first.
