For the first six months in their new house, Priya and Dev had only ever waved at their neighbour, an older man who spent most mornings in his garden.

One hot Saturday, Priya noticed him struggling to carry heavy bags of soil from his car. Without thinking, she walked over. "Can I give you a hand with those?"

"Oh, that'd be terrific, thanks," he said, wiping his forehead. "I'm Frank, by the way. I should've introduced myself months ago."

As they carried the bags, Frank explained that he had lived in the street for forty years and knew everyone. He pointed out which neighbour made the best lemon cake and which one played the drums too loudly.

When they finished, Frank insisted on giving Priya a bag of tomatoes from his garden. "Bring your husband over for a cuppa next weekend," he said.

The following Sunday, Priya and Dev knocked on Frank's door with a tray of homemade samosas. They stayed for two hours, listening to his stories about the suburb.

Now, every Saturday, Frank waves from his garden and calls out, "G'day, you two! Got any more of those samosas?"
