This week's lesson: getting ready for test day

This is your final week. You'll take a complete mock test, review your results and make a short plan for the days before your real test.

How to take the mock test

  • Do Listening, Reading and Writing in one sitting, like the real test: about 2 hours 40 minutes with no breaks. Do Speaking on another day if you like.
  • No pausing, no dictionary, no phone. The estimate only helps if you take it like the real thing.
  • Use the timings: 60 minutes for Reading (about 20 minutes per passage), and in Writing about 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.

How to review it

For each skill, ask two questions: What did I lose marks on? and Is it the same as in week 1?

  • Listening and Reading: sort your mistakes into groups: spelling, word limit, missed signal word, ran out of time, True/False/Not Given confusion. The biggest group is your focus for the next two weeks.
  • Writing: compare your Task 2 with the model answer. Did you answer every part of the question? Is your opinion clear? Did you write at least 250 words?
  • Speaking: listen to your recording. Count long pauses and one-word answers.

If you're not at band 6 yet

That's normal. Most people need more than one round. Look at your lowest skill and repeat that week of the plan, then take another mock test in two or three weeks. Small, regular practice works better than a long session the night before.

The last few days before the test

  • Don't learn new techniques. Use the ones you've practised.
  • Do a little practice each day: one listening section, one reading passage, and say a Part 2 answer out loud.
  • Check the practical details: your test centre, the time, your ID, and what you can bring.
  • Sleep well the night before. Tiredness costs more marks than one extra hour of study.

On the day

  • In Listening, use the reading time and move on if you miss an answer.
  • In Reading, watch the clock: about 20 minutes per passage, and guess rather than leave a blank.
  • In Writing, start with Task 2 if you're worried about time; it's worth more.
  • In Speaking, smile, breathe and keep going. The examiner wants to hear you speak.

A simple progress record

Keep one line for each skill: your quick check band, your mock band and your target. For example:

Listening: 5.5 β†’ 6 (target 6) Β· Reading: 5 β†’ 5.5 (target 6) Β· Writing: 5.5 β†’ 5.5 (target 6)

This makes it easy to see which skill to repeat, and it shows you how far you've come.

What's next

If you reach 6 or more in every skill, well done. Your next step could be the IELTS Band 7 Study Plan. If you need band 6 in a specific skill, go back to that week and work through it again.
